Typical five conditions of children hair loss. These are the:

a. Alopecia areata - is another common form of patchy hair loss in children. The typical story is the sudden appearance of one or more totally bald areas in the scalp. The child with this condition loses hair in circular patches sometimes up to two inches in diameter. The hair at the borders of these patches is loose, but the peach-colored scalp looks and feels normal, without scaling or inflammation. There may be just a few patches of hair loss or a total absence of body hair. Alopecia Areata is not life-threatening, and children who have it are otherwise healthy. Why the hair falls out from the roots is still a mystery. What is known is that the condition is not contagious, caused by foods, or the result of nervousness, hyperactive disorders, or psychological stress. In 20% of cases, another family member has been affected. Some patients with this condition will also develop a grid-like pitting of the nails. Fortunately, over 80% children with alopecia areata grow new hair within 12 months. Oddly, the new hair may temporarily be white, but eventually the hair returns to its natural color. This is a much higher resolution rate than is seen in adults with the same condition, so the news is good.

b. Tinea Capitis - is a disease caused by fungal infection of the skin of the scalp, eyebrows and eyelashes, with a propensity for attacking hair shafts and follicles. It is also called “ringworm of the scalp”. The condition is caused by a fungus that invades the hair shaft and causes the hairs to break. The bare patch of hair loss is often round and the scalp takes on a black-dotted stubble appearance from hair shafts broken off at the surface. There may also be mild itching and scaling. The condition is transmitted by contact from one infected child to another through the sharing of combs, brushes, hats, barrettes, pillows and bath towels. Minor bruising of the scalp occasionally provides an entry for the microscopic fungus. Children 3 to 10 years of age are more susceptible and boys are more so than girls. Ringworm of the scalp is not dangerous. Without treatment, however, the hair loss can be considerable, and some children will develop a boggy, tender swelling of the scalp known as a kerion.

c. Traction Alopecia (physical damage to the hair) - is another common cause of hair loss, particularly in girls. The human hair is quite fragile and does not respond well to the many physical and chemical assaults it has to endure in the name of beauty. Constant teasing, fluffing, combing, washing, curling, blow drying, hot combing, straightening and bleaching can do a number on the fragile hairs, causing them to fall out, especially around the hairline and along the front and sides. In adults, this is not as frequent a problem, as the hair has grown in strength and quality over several years, but it can pose a problem for our little companions who typically have much thinner, fairer and less dense hair. Styles that apply tension to the hair, such as tight ponytails, braiding, barrettes and permanent waving can also damage the hair. However, one should not assume that hair loss in one’s child is due to pony tails that are too tight. If hair loss is noted, it is imperative that a physician evaluate the child and rule out other causes. Recommended treatment for children’s traction alopecia is to handle the hair gently, as little as possible, and use natural hair styles. The hair will usually return, but regrowth can be slow. Injured hair follicles do not heal quickly and often take 3 or more months before they are back to their growing phase.

d. Trichotillomania - is the compulsion to pull out one’s own hair. It results in irregular patches of incomplete hair loss, mainly on the scalp, but may involve the eyebrows and eyelashes as well. The habit of pulling out one’s hair is usually practiced in bed before falling asleep or when the child is studying or watching television. Interestingly, parents are usually not aware of the habit and frequently find it hard to believe that their child would do such a thing. Affected areas of hair loss often appear on the left side of right-handed children and on the right side of left-handed youngsters. Most cases of trichotillomania resolve spontaneously. Diagnosis of this type of alopecia can be done in the convenience of your own home, by closely evaluating your child to see if they have this habit. The cause of this type of condition many times is related to stress, long term ongoing tension or other possible psychological or emotional deficiencies. The best treatment is to ignore the hair pulling and concentrate on why the child is anxious, nervous or frustrated.

e. Telogen Effluvium - Following a high fever, flu or severe emotional stress, hairs that were in their growth phase can sometimes be suddenly converted into their resting phase. Two to 4 months later, when the child is otherwise fine and the stress is forgotten, these hairs can begin to shed. The shedding, which is actually a mass exodus of follicles from growth into dormancy, can last for up to 6 weeks. The hair loss is not total nor does it tend to show up in patches. It typically appears thin throughout the scalp. Unless the initial cause is repeated, all the hairs normally return (Telogen Effluvium explains why many mothers lose so much hair in the weeks following childbirth). Most parents who bring their child to the physician for this condition are worried that the youngster has cancer or another bad disease. Hair takes between 3 and 6 months to re-enter into growth phase, so the restoration can be somewhat slow.

Clarissa McClure

Clarissa McClure chopped off 32 inches of her long, platinum-blonde hair for Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides ponytails to make wigs for children who are suffering hair loss. Even Clarissa has never been snipped with a scissors and not even for a trim. Instead of a fairy tale princess, and now she’s resembles a modern girl even a celebrity starlet – sporting a short blonde bob parted on the side.

Wednesday morning, Clarissa said “I love it”, after the haircut. “Since, I was a little, I liked it long. My Mom likes it that way, so I figured when I was around 10 that I would grow it for Locks of Love.”

Alayna Carrasquillo, who owns The Glamour Spot on Nesconset Highway in Mount Sinai, cut Clarissa’s hair. Clarissa’s mother Carol McClure explains that she had gotten haircuts from Ms. Carrasquillo for more than 10 years when she worked at the Lemon Tree in Riverhead.

According to the Locks of Love official website, once donated hair is received, it is used to make high-quality hairpieces for children below 18 year old who have permanent hair loss or alopecia areata, which causes the hair follicles to shut down. The hairpieces, which typically cost between $3,500 and $6,000, are then donated to children, the website states.

Newswise — A key challenge facing doctors as they treat patients suffering from cancer or other diseases resulting from genetic mutations is that the drugs at their disposal often don’t discriminate between healthy cells and dangerous ones — think of the brute-force approach of chemotherapy, for instance. To address this challenge, Florida State University researchers are investigating techniques for using certain molecules that, when exposed to light, will kill only the harmful cells.

Igor V. Alabugin is an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at FSU. He specializes in a branch of chemistry known as photochemistry, in which the interactions between atoms, small molecules and light are analyzed.

“When one of the two strands of our cellular DNA is broken, intricate cell machinery is mobilized to repair the damage,” he said. “Only because this process is efficient can humans function in an environment full of ultraviolet irradiation, heavy metals and other factors that constantly damage our cells.”

However, a cell that sustains so much damage that both DNA strands are broken at the same time eventually will commit suicide — a process known as apoptosis.

“In our research, we’re working on ways to induce apoptosis in cancer cells — or any cells that have harmful genetic mutations — by damaging both of their DNA strands,” Alabugin said. “We have found that a group of cancer-killing molecules known as lysine conjugates can identify a damaged spot, or ‘cleavage,’ in a single strand of DNA and then induce cleavage on the DNA strand opposite the damage site.

This ‘double cleavage’ of the DNA is very difficult for the cell to repair and typically leads to apoptosis.”
What’s more, the lysine conjugates’ cancer-killing properties are manifested only when they are exposed to certain types of light, thus allowing researchers to activate them at exactly the right place and time, when their concentration is high inside of the cancer cells, Alabugin said.

“So, for example, doctors treating a patient with an esophageal tumor might first inject the tumor with a drug containing lysine conjugates,” he said. “Then they would insert a fiber-optic scope down the patient’s throat to shine light on the affected area.” The light exposure would activate the drug, leading to double-strand DNA damage in the cancerous cells — and cell death — for as much as 25 percent to 30 percent of the cells in the tumor,at a rate that rivals in efficiency any of the highly complex and rare DNA-cleaving molecules produced by nature, Alabugin said — and, perhaps just as importantly, avoids damage to healthy cells.

For tumors located deeper within the body, he pointed to other studies showing that a pulsed laser device can be used to penetrate muscle and other tissues, thereby activating the drugs using near-infrared beams of light.

As proof of principle to the idea that lysine conjugates possess anti-cancer activity, Alabugin collaborated with cancer biologist Dr. John A. Copland of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Jacksonville, Fla. In their tests, several of the molecules demonstrated little effect upon cultured cancer cells — in this case, metastatic human kidney cancer cells — without light, but upon phototherapy activation killed more than 90 percent of the cancer cells with a single treatment. Future work will include demonstrating anti-cancer activity in an animal model. Successful completion of the preclinical studies then could lead to clinical trials with human patients.

Alabugin and his FSU colleagues also have applied for a patent on their work.

Mothers of newborn babies are prone to temporary hair loss after the delivery. But this is only temporary. This is because, when they are pregnant, their oestrogen level goes up. This stops their natural hair growth cycle. After the birth, their oestrogen drops again, and the hair cycle resumes.

Our hormones govern the development of hair that appears after puberty. The male hormone, testosterone, governs beard, body hair and hair in the armpits. The female hormone, estrogen, generally prevents hair growth on the chin and encourages it to grow on the head. Occasionally women develop signs of hair loss or baldness when estrogen levels drop. Treatment with estrogen has been successful in restoring hair growth and stopping of hair loss.

Baldness also known as alopecia is a thinning or abnormal loss of hair of the scalp, it is usually noticeable on the scalp, but can occur anywhere on the body where hair grows. This condition commonly affects men and less frequently women. It may be permanent or temporary, partial or complete, slowly progressive or rapid.

Types of Baldness: The type of baldness is diagnosed by looking on the medical history of the patient and a biopsy of the skin area.

• Alopecia areata - also called as “spotty baldness” because it occurs in patches. This type often found in children and young adults. The hair is lost in sharply defined patches, leaving the scalp smooth. The exact cause of this type of baldness, which is often spreads rapidly, is unknown, but a nervous factor is thought to be responsible. Cortisone has been found to be an effective treatment.
• Male-pattern baldness - it is the most common type of baldness, usually affecting men 18 to 50 years of age. The hair is lost on the frontal areas and on the crown of the scalp. Male-pattern baldness is thought to be caused by a sex-limited dominant hereditary trait and by the male hormones.

• Horseshoe baldness - is the severe case of baldness because almost the entire scalp can becomes hairless.
• Female-pattern baldness - is different from male-pattern baldness in a way that the hair generally thins all over the head, but the frontal hairline is maintained, this type of baldness rarely results in total hair loss.
• Scarring alopecia - scarred areas from burns or other injuries may prevent the hair from growing back. Other type of scarring that may cause hair loss is caused by diseases such as lupus, bacterial or fungal skin infections and skin cancer.
• Toxic alopecia - this type of baldness may occur following a high fever or severe illness. This condition is characterized by temporary hair loss. Certain medications, especially thallium, high doses of vitamin A, and some cancer medicine, may cause toxic alopecia. Medical condition like thyroid disease may also trigger toxic alopecia.
• Telogen effluvium - is a typeof hair loss that occurs suddenly. Handfuls of hair may come out when combing or washing your hair. This type of hair loss usually causes overall hair thinning and not bald patches.
• Trichotillomania (hair pulling) - a habit most common among children, this may also cause hair loss.

Causes of Baldness:
• Endocrine imbalance in either men or women is one of the leading causes of baldness. In male-pattern baldness, the adrenal glands may produce too much androgen, resulting in the loss of scalp hair and an overabundance of body hair (hirsutism). A malfunction of other endocrine glands, such as the pituitary or thyroid, may also cause baldness.
• Temporary hormonal imbalance that usually occurs after pregnancy may cause some temporary loss of scalp hair, known as postpartum alopecia.
• An ovarian dysfunction can also cause hirsutism or baldness in women.
• Teasing the hair, arranging it in ponytails, and the use of hair straigthener, lacquers, and other products that tighten the scalp and damage the hair can aggravate hair loss in women.
• Diseases such as typhoid fever, tuberculosis, syphilis, malaria, and other infectious diseases can also cause hair loss.
• Baldness can also be caused from the use of toxic chemicals such as heparin. This type of baldness, known as “toxic baldness,” is usually temporary.
• Infections of the scalp (folliculitis) and the presence of excessive amounts of oil or of dandruff (seborrhea capitis) can contribute to baldness.
• Nervousness, tension, and strain can also affect normal hair growth.

Naturally Stop The Process of Female Hair Loss

Female hair loss products

Hormones play the majority of the role in hair loss in women. This is why typically the times when a woman will most likely see hair loss start to become an issue is around times of hormonal flux, such as post pregnancy and menopause, or even in times of extreme duress. Stress is a huge influencer of
hormonal balance, and when we feel overly stressed or anxious, this manifests in hormonal fluctuations which can result in skin problems, and hair loss, to name just a few things.

Tips to Keep the Hair You Have, Prevent Further Hair Loss and Help to Protect Current Hair

1.) Scalp Massage. Get yourself a good, stimulating scalp massage oil. My favorite is a natural scalp oil by Jason’s Naturals. It can be found in natural food stores, or you may be able to purchase it online. This scalp massage oil helps stimulate circulation of the scalp and remove dead skin and deposits that may get in the way of healthy hair growth and the health of the follicles which actually are the gateway to
healthy growth and maintenance.

2.) Every time you wash your hair, be sure to massage the scalp as well. Do not choose shampoos that are drying. Instead choose shampoos that are creamier and contain clarifying ingredients. Look for the words “scalp health” or something to that effect on your shampoo formula. This means it contains ingredients that are clarifying to the follicle area and won’t leave debris or residue on the scalp.

3.) Avoid wearing you hair up - at all. Even barettes can have an effect on your hair health and growth. Any restrictions on that are a no-no. Tight ponytails especially. Try to keep you hair as free as possible.

4.) Also avoid processing. This means coloring, straightening, perming, highlighting, blowing dry excessively, straight ironing, curling irons and any other high heat or harsh chemical methods of styling the hair. These will just aggravate your condition by further weakening the internal structure and outside bonds of the hair shaft, as well as drying the scalp and irritating it further, making the hair fall out more easily at the root.

5.) There are also some quality hair thickening shampoos and conditioners that are actually designed for women with naturally thin, limp hair. These types of products are usually heavily fortified with amino acids and proteins, which are great building blocks to healthy, strong and thick hair. Why not use them to your advantage?

Laser Hair therapy is a “NEW” non-surgical scientific approach to the treatment of hair loss, thinning hair, baldness and problems associated with the scalp. Laser Hair replacement is a tested method using low level laser energy, or “soft” laser light to effectively treat the appearance of hair loss.
Non-surgical Laser Hair therapy treatments utilize a device containing therapeutic low level lasers developed in Europe. The laser treatment delivers light energy directly from rotating laser positions designed to cosmetically treat the appearance of thin, fine, damaged hair. Physicians are praising this technology as an effective treatment.

The Evolution of Laser hair Therapy Treatments
In 1964, Professor Andre Mester began experimenting with the use of low-power laser energy in Budapest, Hungary.
In his experiments with wound treatment on mice, he noticed rapid healing due to microcirculation of blood supply. This healing was also obvious in Laser Hair Rejuvenation treatment of diabetic patients suffering with dystrophic sores. He was amazed to find sores that would not otherwise heal were healed, and he also observed the appearance of accelerated hair growth and thickening of hair in the treated areas. Today NASA is using Low Level Lasers to heal wounds of there astronauts in space.
This theory through its evolution has since been refined and is widely becoming one of the most popular non-invasive hair loss treatments.
